CARIBBEAN CRICKET
In Winter 2023, I was given the incredible opportunity to jet off to Trinidad & Tobago to embark on a Producing role for a renowned London-based production company. Within a mere 48 hours of receiving the call, I found myself on a Boeing 777, crossing the vast Atlantic Ocean with my trusty FX9 in the hold.
My role was to produce, shoot and edit several 10-minute features to be broadcast between innings of the Super 50 Cup domestic cricket tournament on ESPN Caribbean, for Cricket West Indies. No time to acclimatise, I started shooting on the first day with an exclusive interview with CWI’s Director of Cricket.
One of my most memorable experiences was a visit to the Emperor Valley Zoo in Port of Spain, where I filmed two Jamaican players, Jeavor Royal and Kirk McKenzie, as they bravely interacted with ‘wild’ animals such as snakes, lions, and giraffes. This entertaining feature wasn’t just a hit with our client; it also garnered massive attention on social media, racking up an impressive 100,000 views on the zoo’s official Facebook page.
But that was just the beginning. From in-depth interviews with globally recognized players and Head Coach Daren Sammy OBE, to filming an America's Got Talent-style magic competition, every moment was filled with creative challenges, and great memories. This role also involved creating motion graphics and applying sound design, testing my decade of experience in all aspects of production.
In addition to producing the planned features, I was also tasked with capturing key moments in the style of ENG for Cricket West Indies. This included anything from a press conference with the management team to an interview with cricket legend Alzari Joseph, and slow-motion shots of players arriving at the iconic Brian Lara Stadium. Many of these extras, along with segments from my features, were shared across CWI's social media platforms, including YouTube, which boasts an impressive fanbase of nearly 4 million subscribers.
This job was challenging, and demanded close collaboration with an exceptional production crew, especially the incredible Match Producer who was there every step of the way. It was an incredibly rewarding experience and a positive learning curve that has made me a better Producer.
